Many newbies entering the Internet Marketing business for the first time have the following confusion often enough: what is a good search engine rank for their site to have? I have seen this question arise with a lot of my newbie clients. They are often lost between the jargons that are new to them, and the lack of one concise and yet precise document that answers them.

First Page Versus Other Pages

Top-Ranking-Is-The-Goal

If you were to do SEO on Google or any other search engine, the first goal you will have in your mind is to rank within the top-10. That is, you should aim your site to be one of the first 10 search results. In other words, since Google lists 10 search results on the first page, your site should be on the first page of the search queries that you want to rank for.

The commercial leverage is unquestionable. It has been studied over and over that more than 92.7% of e-commerce and online revenue generation happens from the first page of Google, when compared to the total revenue that Google SEO generates in the online industry.

Top-3 Versus Top-10

SEO with Google does not stop just by getting into the top 10 rankings. There is a major catch – out of the 92.7% of commerce by the top-10 sites, the top-3 sites will account for 65.4% of the revenue. The other 7 sites – ranked from 4th to 10th – will bring around the remaining (92.7 – 65.4) = 27.3% of the revenue. The exact figures – 92.7% and 65.4% – may vary by a percentage point in either direction year-on-year, but the ballpark figures remain.

How To Get To Top-3

SEO by Google is best done as a consistent effort. The returns of being in top-3 are extremely rich, but that cannot happen overnight. There are a number of sites competing for this thin pie, and you will have to consistently beat all your competitors to attain and retain the high ranks. So you need to design a detailed plan of attack and need to follow it meticulously. This should take you to the top-3 in a period of a few months. The exact timing could change depending upon how competitive your niche is.

If planning or consistent action is a problem then you could think of availing the services of professional SEO providers. In my experience, many of my clients choose to go with professional SEO service providers so that they can sustain the link building effort with the plan and discipline in place.
